About Nameless Cities:
Nameless Cities are the unknown places depicted in my art. Visualize these shapes, lines, and glyphs in a massive scale in the skies above, slowly rotating and overlapping like the innards of a cosmic kaleidoscope. The pieces you see represent a snapshot of that movement, capturing a moment of those dynamic cities. Nameless Cities comes out of a flow state where I am removed and something else steps in to guide my hand in making the designs. I don't think about what I am making or pre-plan it. I sit and allow the transmission of information to occur. When I find myself thinking about what needs to go where, I take a break from the piece because using my logical brain isn't how I like to create. My hope is that while viewing my pieces, you feel the kinetic energy captured, and I welcome you to sit with the emotions that come up when you view my art.
About the Artist:
My creativity as a child was channeled into drawing, dancing, and writing. I doodled, journaled, and wrote short stories until college at The University of Cincinnati where I was able to take some fine arts class in my attempt to pursue Interior Design. Although I was not good at life drawing, I enjoyed interpreting still life pieces in pastels. Seeing the way lighting changes the shape and color of things was fascinating. While pursuing Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, I grew my skills in fashion figure drawing and fabric rendering, sewing and garment construction, and patternmaking.
In 2009 after finishing design school but not able to get far into the fashion industry, my best friend and I started making hair bows and dread lock hair falls. We sold these at a local beauty salon and this grew into a small business of fashion accessories which we sold on our website and Etsy and at events. We traveled to festivals and roller derby events all over the Los Angeles area and San Diego to sell our wares, and even went to Las Vegas and Eugene, Oregon several times for vending opportunities.
When I moved to Seattle in 2013, my friend and I could no longer continue the business that was based in Long Beach_, CA. My creativity shifted to illustrations when I finally had a dedicated art space that I shared with my roommate. We had art sessions together, listening to music, chatting, and laughing; this pushed me to spend more time drawing. I fell in love with lines and shapes and created star charts of these places, which I called Nameless Cities, using colored pencils and markers. I started painting in acrylic paint a few years later and have loved exploring color combinations and creating layered, textured backgrounds. I have presented my artwork at the Tacoma Arts at the Armory show (2021- 2023), the Tacoma Night Market in 2022, and the 2024 World Goth Day Market.
Artist Reception: 7/18/24 5-7:00pm
Exhibition through 9/30/24 Daily 8:30am-5:00pm
