Event: Feathers + Flight: Environmental Speaker Series

MARCH'S PROGRAM

7pm on Thursday, March 17, at the Tacoma Nature Center, 1919 S. Tyler St,
Tacoma WA 98405

FREE and open to the public.

When you see a bird preening, you are really watching a show that has been
going on for more than 150 million years. Feathers allow birds to stay warm
in winter and cool in summer, shed rain, fly more aerodynamically than any
jet, hide from predators and stand out for mates.

How did something so elegant and yet so utilitarian come to be? Find out
in this talk and hands-on demo by master birder and Seattle Audubon board
member Connie Sidles.

Connie will show you how feathers evolved and how these specialized
structures do so much to help birds survive. She'll show you specimens from
the Burke Museum that will dazzle you with their beauty. Connie will also
read to you from her latest book about her favorite birding site, Montlake
Fill, a place that was once a garbage dump but is now a natural area that
attracts scores of bird species every year.
