For over two millennia, in many parts of the world, special breads have been used as a vehicle for a call to celebration. Hidden inside these loaves is a small object of symbolic value. When the loaf is portioned, the one who receives the object gains “royalty” and special privileges.
In The Royal Breadshow, we will host group sculpture-making events with professional artists, seniors, students, and others, to craft miniature porcelain sculptures. The sculptures will be fired, exhibited in our mobile gallery, then placed in the celebration loaves, baked by participating local bakeries. Loaves will be sold at bakeries, The Farmer’s Market, and in the Axle Contemporary gallery. Proceeds from sales will be split between the bakeries, the gallery, and organizations that feed the hungry.
All breads sold will be custom wrapped in baker’s parchment. On the wrapping, there will be information about these world traditions, aphorisms and reveries about bread, and a list of the participating artists and bakeries. Each parchment will feature a different celebratory word that represents a blessing, and an outline for cutting out a crown to be worn by whomever receives the slice with the sculpture inside.

Processes ranges from 8x10 view cameras to smartphone photos, from split-toned waxed callotype to digitally manipulated inkjet prints, collage, and monoprinting. For many of the artists, this has provided an opportunity for experimentation and reflection, outside of the artist’s established oeuvre. The book is a rich portrait of a community of artists-photographers working in New Mexico at this time, by the photographers themselves.

The Renga Project
Between SITE and W21 in the Railyard Park in Santa Fe, is The Renga Project<http://axleart.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=964d5c09130bb541979660c84&id=3fd8db36fc&e=5ef6d628a8>. Each week we hang a new stanza. Renga is an ancient traditional collaborative form of poetry from Japan. Poets write short stanzas which respond to what has come before. Our Renga is being written by 50 New Mexico poets. Santa Fe’s Poet Laureate Jon Davis starts each of the four seasonal sections. The other stanzas are written by 48 other New Mexico poets. There are 6 stanzas at a time on the sign. As each new stanza is added, the oldest is removed. We experience, over the course of a year, a changing and evolving 52 stanza collaborative poem.
Each Friday, at 5pm a poet reads his/her stanza at the sign. Coming up:
