The competition, known as the concours, used commissioned pieces of music that were lyrically and technically demanding. The first-prize winner each year was probably the happiest person in Paris that day. In April, the University of Puget Sound wind faculty will pay homage to the grand tradition of the Paris Conservatory or Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Puget Sound faculty members have chosen some of the best known works created for the concours from the late 19th century through the 20th century. The Jacobsen Series concert Music of the Paris Conservatory will be held Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. in Schneebeck Concert Hall. Ticket information is below. The concert will feature Rodger Burnett, horn; Karla Flygare, flute; Jennifer Nelson, clarinet; Paul Rafanelli, bassoon; Dan Williams, oboe; Fred Winkler, saxophone; Tanya Stambuk, piano; and Duane Hulbert, piano. The program includes: Jacques Ibert: Three Short Pieces Fernande Decruck: Sonata in C-sharp Major for Alto Saxophone and Piano Camille Saint-Saëns: Sonata for Bassoon and Piano Op. 168 Maurice Ravel: Sonatine for Oboe and Piano Georges Marty: Premiere Fantaisie for Clarinet and Piano Gabriel Fauré: Fantaisie for Flute and Piano Paul Dukas: Villanelle for Horn and Piano Darius Milhaud: Scaramouche The Jacobsen Series, named in honor of Leonard Jacobsen, former chair of the piano department at Puget Sound, has been running since 1984. The Jacobsen Series Scholarship Fund awards annual music scholarships to outstanding student performers and scholars. The fund is sustained entirely by season subscribers and ticket sales.
