Job Title: Sustainability Assistant

Salary: $16.00 - $20.00 Hourly

Job Type: Temporary part-time, approximately 20 hours / week

Duration: May 2, 2016 - Sept 2, 2016

Location: Metro Parks Tacoma Headquarters, 4702 S. 19th St., Tacoma, Washington

This position will work closely with the District's Chief Strategy Officer to implement the recently developed district-wide Environmental Sustainability Planhttp://www.metroparkstacoma.org/sustainability/. The ideal candidate is a person who is passionate and knowledgeable about sustainable practices, including energy and water conservation, waste reduction and landscape management, and is capable at encouraging employee and public engagement in these areas.

Under the direction of the Chief Strategy Officer and Sustainability Coordinator, you will:

  • Plan, organize and implement a district-wide employee engagement campaign on water conservation, spanning from June through August. This includes writing multiple articles for a featured section in the July employee newsletter, working with a graphic designer to create posters, and coordinating one "lunch-and-learn" event.

  • Work with Tacoma Public Utilities and Puget Sound Energy to begin using the EPA Portfolio Manager, by creating facility profiles and inputting data for all MPT electricity and natural gas accounts.

  • Closely monitor irrigation water use and report to Community & Neighborhood Parks (CNP) Manager. Work with CNP Manager and park leads to monitor water use in areas pre-identified as potential sites to reduce irrigation.

  • Work with communications and marketing staff to research, create and distribute materials relating to sustainability and environmental issues to the public on a regular basis.

  • Help facilitate Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium's Green Team monthly meetings and provide support to the Green Team as necessary.

  • Potentially coordinate a zoo-wide waste audit in August.

  • Perform a variety of support services and assistance for the Chief Strategy Officer as related to sustainability initiatives.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in pursuing a career in sustainability or other related environmental position.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.

  • Ability to read and interpret accurately difficult and complex material; collect, compile and objectively analyze data; write clear and concise reports.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft software applications, especially Excel.

  • Be currently enrolled in, or have graduated from, a college or university.

  • Have a minimum of one year course work in courses relating to environmental issues, sustainability, environmental education, park and tourism operations, or closely related field.
