Issue No. 10

March 2014

Dear Heather Joy,

I know it's late on a Friday afternoon, but I sure hope you can take a moment to read this Spaceworks update. There are more details and images below, but the quick overview is:

  • Peanut Butter Jelly Jam (try saying that 5 times fast) Kickstarter only has 3 days left. I pledged today and can't wait for my SIGNED copy of the PBJJ art book! Oh and the Kickstarter video Nick & Bethany made is awesome!

  • New beautiful murals going in at 11th & Market

  • New film in the Tollbooth Gallery - make sure to watch the entire film, otherwise you might be sad

  • CONCRETE MARKET is open - furniture made of concrete, yes concrete, and it's gorgeous! Grand opening is Saturday, April 5th - BE THERE!

  • The Rogue Friar sells handmade leather journals - do you have yours yet?

  • 22 new projects have been accepted into the Spaceworks program, from comics to coffee, and clay to snoods

  • Hilltop Literary Art Zine - Submit by 5/1/14

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!

Spaceworks announces two new murals in downtown Tacoma!

In progress now, official debut April 17, on display through August 2014.
Artists Chelsea O'Sullivan and Diana Leigh Surma have been commissioned by Spaceworks to create murals that will bring life to the longstanding vacant building at the corner of South 11th and Market Street.  Their efforts will activate the intersection, prevent vandalism, and inspire creativity in our community.

CONCRETE MARKET is open!

Duncan Susag, owner of Sound Concrete Countertops, joined Spaceworks in order to further his business by securing a location to have a showroom, gallery and retail space. He has done just that at 917 MLK, where he recently opened "Concrete Market" which offers artisan concrete designs for residential and commercial spaces. Susag and his right hand man Mac transformed the 800 square foot office space into a sleek showroom allowing visitors to see how beautiful, warm and functional concrete can be.

Visit them at 917 Martin Luther King Jr. Way on Friday and Saturday afternoons or by appointment.

SAVE THE DATE for their grand opening on Saturday April 5th from noon to 6pm.

We invite you to learn more about Gary Waldron, his handmade leather journals, and his experience in the Spaceworks Tacoma business training program. He didn't get a space from Spaceworks but he learned a lot and his journals are available for sale in the community. Writer (and owner of Moss & Mineral) Lisa Kinoshita put together a great article about Gary and his business, Rogue Friar.

By making a broad sweep of the Tacoma community, The LAZ team hopes to read submissions by storytellers and poets who enjoy submitting to community publications. Submit by May 1, 2014.

"Spaceworks Tacoma represents a solid partnership opportunity for property owners and the arts community. Vacant spaces can create negative perceptions and do little to encourage leasing. In times like these, it is important for the City and property owners to work cooperatively and make Tacoma a better place to live, play, and do business."

Mayor Marilyn Strickland

Special Thanks
Over the course of the program, Spaceworks has partnered with (current partners listed first): AT & T, A Street Associates LLC, Bristol Equities, Lee Noble, Paul Okner, Pioneer Health Services, Power Property Consultants, Seven Seventeen Investors LLC, University of Washington Tacoma, the Marie T. Wilson Trust, Steve Shaub,  LinMar Managerment, Tim Johnson, The Chambers Family, George and Al Howe, Neil Walter Company, Eric Cedarstrand, and Simon & Johnson LLC.
