Saturday, October 19th, 2024: Furusato 古里 Homeland opening reception at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, 3-5pm. Free for all ages and there'll be food & refreshments, please RSVP at bit.ly/apccyoshiartreception. Showing October 3, 2024 through January 28, 2025, APCC is open every day from 9am-5pm, but please call (253) 383-3900 before visiting—there are many community activities in the exhibition space. The main entrance door is locked and there's a greeter to let you in. This project is funded by the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program from the City of Tacoma Arts Commission.
Furusato, meaning homeland in Japanese, is a series of paper quilts, hand sewn together from relief and monotype images of Northwest flora and landscapes, hand printed on Japanese washi paper. Some washi are dyed in natural pigments like indigo. This project explores and acknowledges homeland, specifically friendships and the mutual generosity between Indigenous- and Japanese-American individuals—both communities bonded by empathy for loss of their land and homes. Furusato involves learning about natural dyeing processes from Wild Dreams Farm & Seed on Vashon, working directly on the land from seed to plant to pigment. This exhibition also features four community quilts made from prints by workshop participants held at the APCC, Tacoma Public Libraries, and SAMi High School—patching and mending wounds, while creating a sense of home.
Yoshi will also have a table selling her artwork and come see this show on October 5th for the Taste of Asia, celebrating flavors from Japan at the APCC. 11am-2pm, get your tickets at: asiapacificculturalcenter.org/tasteofasia
Correction for Saturday, October 5th: Yoshi will not be at the Taste of Asia Japan, but please come and enjoy food, the Furusato show, and good company at the APCC from 11am-2pm. Tickets at asiapacificculturalcenter.org/tasteofasia
