Issue No. 11

April 2014

Dear Heather Joy,

April has been a busy month for Spaceworks and we have lots to report! We launched our second Creative Enterprise Training Program on April 7th with 20 projects participating. We are very excited about all of the projects that will be coming to Tacoma this year. Five of them have already received space including: The Tshirt Men Company located at 919 MLK; three projects have moved into the Old Post Office: PolyRev, Abby Kok Photo Studio, and Kristin Giordano Photo Studio; and Do the Extraordinary will be moving into our newest space this week at 1936 Pacific Avenue (special thanks to UW Tacoma!)

We have new Artscapes going up around downtown this week, "Watch and Be Amazed!" Four new installations are going in as we speak into the Woolworth Windows, including an installation of fresh Wayzgoose prints created on Sunday at the annual festival, the display cases in the lobby of the Old Post Office have two new installations, and of course the two new murals at 11st and Market were completed over the past month between rain drops and they look amazing!

There are several events and deadlines we wanted you to know about:

  • Dub City Open House & Performance Friday at 923 MLK
  • Kickstarter to support Dub City
  • Rodney Goes Green Screening Premiere on May 16th
  • Tacoma Arts Commission seeks new commissioners
  • Participate in Stadium Fare 2014!
  • Artist Trust "I Am An Artist" Workshop and Happy Hour
  • New site at 1936 Pacific Avenue

Please read below for all the details.

I hope to see you out there!

After 10 years of providing Tacoma with albums, videos, and premiere events, Kerry Williams aka "Dub City", is taking his company Monopoly Entertainment to the next level. Williams joined Spaceworks, was provided a space at 923 MLK Way, and is building out the future headquarters for Monopoly Entertainment. Between now and the end of August, the space will be utilized for rehearsing, hosting events, producing an album, and launching a west coast tour. The new album, featuring Dub City along with local and national artists, is set for release on the 4th of July 2014.

Join us for performances on these Friday nights:

Spaceworks is excited to announce we are working once again with the University of Washington Tacoma in a community effort to bring another exciting Spaceworks project to the Pacific Avenue streetscape. Do The Extraordinary (DtE), owned by Justin Kercher, will open its doors in June 2014 at 1936 Pacific Avenue.

DtE offers beautiful jewelry made of wood, clothing for every adventure, and accessories that keep you warm in the winter and stylin' in the summer. And it's all handmade here in Tacoma! Currently only available online, Justin wants to bring his products to more people by having a retail presence. Locating in the heart of the University campus, in Tacoma's museum district, and next door to Bleach and Urban Exchange will surely be a win-win.

Spaceworks is proud to be supporting this creative enterprise and we encourage you to check it out when they open in June.

"Spaceworks Tacoma represents a solid partnership opportunity for property owners and the arts community. Vacant spaces can create negative perceptions and do little to encourage leasing. In times like these, it is important for the City and property owners to work cooperatively and make Tacoma a better place to live, play, and do business."

Mayor Marilyn Strickland

We launched our second Creative Enterprise Training Program on April 7th with 20 projects participating. We are very excited about all of the projects that will be coming to Tacoma this year. Five of them have already received space including: The Tshirt Men Company located at 919 MLK; three projects have moved into the Old Post Office: PolyRev, Abby Kok Photo Studio, and Kristin Giordano Photo Studio; and Do the Extraordinary will be moving into our newest space this week at 1936 Pacific Avenue (special thanks to UW Tacoma!) We have new Artscapes going up around downtown this week, "Watch and Be Amazed!" Four new installations are going in as we speak into the Woolworth Windows, including an installation of fresh Wayzgoose prints created on Sunday at the annual festival, the display cases in the lobby of the Old Post Office have two new installations, and of course the two new murals at 11st and Market were completed over the past month between rain drops and they look amazing! There are several events and deadlines we wanted you to know about: * Dub City Open House & Performance Friday at 923 MLK * Kickstarter to support Dub City * Rodney Goes Green Screening Premiere on May 16th * Tacoma Arts Commission seeks new commissioners * Participate in Stadium Fare 2014! * Artist Trust "I Am An Artist" Workshop and Happy Hour * New site at 1936 Pacific Avenue Please read below for all the details.
