Japanese Temari 2-Day Workshop Offered at Asia Pacific Cultural Center
Life is a Circus, 2011
Tacoma WA – Temari artist, Kathleen Hewitt will be teaching a 2-day introductory temari workshop June 1st and 2nd from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm on both days at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center. The APCC is located at 4851 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma WA. Kathleen received Shihan (Master/teacher) certification by the Japan Temari Association in Toyko, Japan in 2009.
Hewitt says, “The temari design for this class, Life is a Circus, was created so students would learn a multitude of basic stitching techniques in a comprehensive 2- day session. Once students learn how to make a temari base, mark a simple division and apply the various stitching elements in class, they will have a good foundation for stitching other temari designs.”
“The study of temari goes beyond learning a new art. It’s a process of feeling grounded and connected. As the ancient Greek Euripides said, ‘Mighty is geometry; joined with art, resistless.’ This joining of geometry and art, found in temari, creates the balance and harmony we all seek in our daily lives. No math skills are actually needed, however. If you can fold a paper strip, the strip does the math for you!”
No previous experience is required for the 10-hour workshop. Workshop fee is $100. All supplies/tools are provided for an additional $15.00 materials fee.
About Temari
Temari is an ancient Japanese fiber art. Its origin is thought to come from kemari, meaning football, brought from China to Japan around 6th century A.D. Temari means handball and today’s stitched designs on a sphere can range from simple to intricate. A gift of temari is a wish for good luck to the recipient. As with most Japanese art, symbolism is prevalent in many traditional temari designs.
