Community Engagement Projects

[ceproj]Ten Tacoma-based artists and teams are sharing out a message of care and compassion with our community on an intimate level. These artists are each producing a care project – some virtually and some physically – for the community to participate in for free. Follow along on the Tacoma Arts Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/TacomaArtsCommission/ and Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/tacomaarts/ channels.

  • Tamiko and Teruko Nimura will partner with the Food is Free Project Tacoma community to distribute sets of mental health care packages to 7 Food is Free tables across Tacoma.
  • Jamika Scott is creating a photo and video storytelling project that highlights Tacomans talking about who and what they love.
  • Daniel Garcia’s Community Boombox brings live DJ experiences to the public sphere in pop-up performances to delight passersby.
  • Gerardo Peña’s butterfly mural, Metamorphosis, is a photo opportunity. In the age of social media, a photo op is a great way to create an interactive art piece that will respect social distancing.
  • Paige D. Pettibon is sharing Going Home, a book written and illustrated by Paige in Lushootseed and English. Paige will provide a downloadable PDF worksheet that accompanies her book.
  • Saiyare Refaei, in collaboration with four other Tacoma-based artists, is painting a mural to raise the question: "when will we begin to act and care for our planet?"
  • Abby E. Murray will be sharing out a PDF poetry anthology of original poems written by undocumented youth in Pierce County.
  • Anida Yoeu Ali will be producing an exhibition of artworks created by children in 'Mommy Art School' during the pandemic.
  • Jessica Spring  will be sharing out copies of hand-printed “You’ll Heal Tacoma” posters through an interactive art installation as well as other distribution points across Tacoma.
  • Jefferson Mok’s project combines the artistic practice of using “found” materials with StoryCorps-style of storytelling where community members have access to record or store digital content, these new collaboratively created art pieces will be featured on a rotating virtual gallery.
