Subject: [TacomaArt] Last chance to register for Japanese Temari Workshop
Space is still available for the 2-day, 10 hr workshop planned next
Saturday and Sunday, June 1-2 at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center in
Tacoma.  If you and/or a friend has an interest in Japanese culture, folk
art, history, etc. and have the time, please contact me asap to register:
kathy@kathleenhewitt.com
253-229-3100

Cost of the workshop is $100 - broken down, that's $10/hour and includes
the benefit of a small class size. This class also contains detailed
illustrated handouts about each stitch taught and instructions for the
temari design, "Life is a Circus." All supplies and materials are included
with an additional $15 (plus tax) fee. You need only bring yourself and a
bagged lunch and drink.

Some of you may have seen me demonstrating Japanese temari at a local area
event. If so, you know this art is not as difficult as it appears. The
mystery is in the technique. The study of Japanese temari offers many
benefits. Some of my favorites are:

- a balanced, peaceful, meditative awareness through the use of
creativity and logic (using both sides of the brain)
- joy in creating something special and unique
- a sense of connection through temari's symbolic representation

Right now I have 4 eager students returning for their 2nd class on the 2nd
day of this workshop. They have already learned what will be taught on the
1st day. If you couldn't make it to the "Wrapped Bands" class taught last
month at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, this workshop will cover it and
more on day 1. Day 2 will consist of learning to stitch open shapes and
spindles. Techniques of layering, overlapping and interlocking will also be
studied. I purposely designed the temari for this class with the intent of
including as many elements as can be covered in a 2 day period.

I am an organized instructor.  In 2008, I was certified "Shihan"
(Master/Teacher) by the Japan Temari Association located in Tokyo, Japan.
I've been a student of temari for over 14 years. With a passion to share
this dying art with others, I enthusiastically offer this workshop. I hope
you will be able to join me and the others next weekend.

Wishing you peace on this Memorial Day weekend,

Kathy Hewitt

Mauro Giuliani, a phenomenal guitar virtuoso, composed the "cream" of
the flute and guitar duo repertoire, seldom to be heard on the sweeter,
more intimate and expressively nuanced instruments with which he and his
friends Beethoven, Rossini and Hummel were familiar. The Giulianiad was
a journal for guitarists published in London a few years after Giuliani's
death.
