ARTIST TRUST ANNOUNCES EIGHT FINALISTS FOR THE
2013 ARTS INNOVATOR AWARDS

Artist Trust is excited to announce the eight finalists to be moved into the final judging process for the 2013 Arts Innovator Awardshttp://artisttrust.org/index.php/for-artists/money#arts_innovator_awards. At $25,000 each, Arts Innovator Awards support Washington State generative artists of any discipline who are originating new work, experimenting with new ideas, taking risks and pushing the boundaries in their field.

This year the open application process received 113 applications from artists across the state. Four panels consisting of artists and arts professionals selected the finalists from four discipline categories of Literary, Media, Performing and Visual Arts.

The two Arts Innovator Award recipients will be announced mid-October 2013.

The eight finalists:

John Gradehttp://www.johngrade.com/ creates large-scale sculptures that are displayed both in museums and outdoors in nature, often moving from one location to another where they change and weather over time.

Gary Hillhttp://www.garyhill.com/ is one of the most accomplished artists of his generation, and is regarded as a major contributor to new media art from the 1970s into the present.

Paul Kikuchihttp://paulkikuchi.com/ is a percussionist, composer, and sound artist.

Haruko Nishimurahttp://degenerateartensemble.com/ has produced a consistent stream of original and adventurous works combining physical theater and butoh dance with live experimental music.

Doug Nuferhttp://artisttrust.org/index.php/award-winners/artist-profile/doug_nufer writes fiction, poetry, and literary pieces for performance, favoring "formal constraints," such as in his most recent novel Never Again, in which no word appears more than once.

Peter Scherrerhttp://peterscherrer.blogspot.com/ is a Bellingham-based painter who creates lush paintings of the Pacific Northwest.

David Shieldshttp://www.davidshields.com/ is the author of 14 books, including his most recent, How Literature Saved My Life (Knopf). Among his many awards, Shields has received a Guggenheim fellowship, two NEA fellowships, and an Ingram Merrill Foundation Award.

Juniper Shueyhttp://zoejuniper.org/ is visual artist, known for his video installations and sculptural performances.

The Arts Innovator Award is made possible through a gift from The Dale and Leslie Chihuly Foundation, created in August 2009 to inspire and educate the public regarding all forms of art, and to provide support to artists and arts organizations.
