Call for Artists

A Seattle-based independent board game designer is looking for an
illustrator or graphic designer in the Puget Sound region to create art and
visual design elements for a board game which is mechanically complete. I
am looking for a collaborator who can create a distinctive visual world and
deliver work on schedule.

Your original artwork may be in any 2D medium, but files must be delivered
digitally, both to apply and during production. During production, layout
templates will be provided, and art must fit templates precisely on final
delivery.

The Project

A board game which combines Deck Building and Territory Control,
tentatively set in a 1950's vision of the future full of fantastic
vehicles, gadgets and characters. I say tentatively because while the
gameplay elements are nearing completion, with only balance tweaks
remaining, the art for the game doesn't yet exist.  As the artist, you will
create a world filled with fantastic technology, danger, and humor, and
will be responsible for creating characters, weapons, propaganda, and
technology consistent within that world. You will not be responsible for
creating any gameplay elements – the art will fill out cards which already
have layout and copy, a board which is functional without art, etc.

My current vision for a theme would fall somewhere along the following
lines: 50's Golden Age comics

and Mr Gutsy/Mr
Handyhttp://store.bethsoft.com/brands/fallout/mister-handy-trusts-abraxo-tshirt.htmlfrom
the Fallout series,  though the style could fall anywhere from
comic-art to detailed, painterly work. Though the primary purpose of the
art is to reinforce gameplay concepts, I'm looking for your style, not mine.

Phase 1: Exploratory Work

The selected artist or team will produce a set of four images for inclusion
in a crowd-funding campaign to give backers a sense of what to expect from
the art:

  1. An armed soldier

  2. A flying vehicle

  3. A convoluted contraption

  4. Two leader characters towering over a battlefield lined with their
    armies (Box cover art)

The artist will be compensated for the exploratory work. If the
crowd-funding campaign is successful, the artist will then be hired back on
to complete production of the full game's art.

I will discuss the game, core concepts, gameplay, themes, and whatever else
you think will be helpful in developing the art and world for the game.

Phase 2: Production

Art will be needed for:

A set of approximately 30-35 CCG-style cards (Layout provided)

One image for the back of all cards

A board: A landscape defined by hexagons (Layout provided) – the art on the
board will be decorative and informative, not structural to gameplay.

An instruction Booklet

Four Commander characters each in their command post/lair.

Cover Art which includes several of the above

Promotional material, such as

logo

color scheme, perhaps in Pantone numbers

letterhead

Posters based on the characters and world of the game
