Hilltop Artists staff has just finished installing a series of student-made glass artworks in the W.W. Seymour Conservatory for Symbiosis: A Mutually Beneficial Relationship! Hilltop Artists students invented, designed, and created imaginary glass birds, bugs, and plants that represent symbiotic relationships that are now placed throughout the Conservatory. Now, until June 16th, the installation will be open for public viewing. Admission to the Conservatory is $3, and children ages 11 and younger are free. Your first chance to view and purchase the glass art in the installation will be at the ticketed Sneak Preview Event on Friday, April 11th from 6pm til 8pm. Beverages and hors d'oeuvres will be served. In fact, the Minkoff Foundation generously paid for Jason Mouer, Hot Shop Manager, to travel to the conference. Jason spoke on a panel with representatives from 9 similar glass arts programs from across the country about using glass arts to reach underserved youth. The session was a major hit and fueled ongoing conversations throughout the rest of the conference. This gathering of glass arts programs for underserved youth was one of the first in history. The experience was invaluable, as it provided strong networking opportunities for Hilltop Artists along with insight into how other programs operate. Jason learned that Hilltop Artists is one of only two glass arts programs in the nation that solely works with underserved youth, which is testimony to the scope and breadth of our mission. Hilltop Artists was credited as "the program that started it all" during the session. What an honor for Hilltop Artists to be involved in such an important event! A capacity-building grant, we will use these funds to gain new fundraising skills, including creating and implementing a donor development strategic plan and educating the board and staff on fundraising. We cannot wait to delve into the new capacities that the Satterberg Foundation is funding as they will help us continue to connect youth to better futures! We also received a substantial grant from the Ben B. Cheney Foundation to fund equipment upgrades in the Hot Shop. Our kiln, which is used for glass fusion projects, has been in dire need of replacement. The Cheney Foundation grant puts us well on our way towards this crucial equipment upgrade so that Hilltop Artists students can keep creating beautiful fused glass art! YOU will have the chance to fund other critical equipment upgrades in our upcoming IndieGoGo campaign! Each group of students designed a glass sculpture and then sent it to the other to create. After the sculptures were created, each program mailed it to the other. Team Production students loved the exchange and the sculpture from Berlin Glas is now displayed in the Hot Shop. Our newest international collaboration begins this summer! Hilltop Artists will send a student to Tacoma's French Sister City, Biot, and they will send an art student to Tacoma. Not only will the students learn each other's glass art techniques, they will also be immersed in each other's culture. This exchange is a landmark event for Hilltop Artists, and is one of the first exciting chapters in our next 20 years.
