The Tacoma School District and the Sherman Elementary Parent Teacher
Student Association (PTSA) is seeking an artist or artist team as part of
an artist in residency at Sherman Elementary to develop and instruct a
12-20 week arts curriculum that will reach all students through the K
– 5th grade
levels. Sherman has a dedicated Art room which the Artist in Residence
will be able to conduct session based on the schedule. There is no
pre-determined schedule, but classes will occur during the school day, on a
regular basis and the schedule collaboratively developed with the selected
artist, teachers and school administration.
Sherman Elementary is located at 4415 N. 38th St. Tacoma, WA 98407 and has
a student population of approximately 355 students. The Artist in
Residence program’s goals are to provide each student with a meaningful
arts experience that occurs within the school day, encourage arts
exploration on their own, and work alongside school classroom curriculum to
further deepen the art experience. This is the second year of the Artist
in Residence position. Artists that specialize in a specific media are
encouraged to apply.
It is the expectation that the lessons will focus not only on individual
development, but also the development of a collaborative artwork that can
be on display following the culmination of the residency. The project
budget is developed upon the desire/assumption for approximately 125 hours
of in-school instruction (at a $35/hour rate) and 60 hours of planning,
meeting and preparation (at $25/hour) as well as approximate $2000 supply
budget.
The project budget includes artist’s fees, planning and teaching
compensation and travel expenses; all material and fabrication costs;
shipping and transportation of materials to the site; any applicable taxes.
