Purple Phoenix Productions is proud to announce the World Premiere of REFLECTIONS OF THE
SUPREMES on Saturday June 29, 2013 at 8:00 p.m.at Federal Way’s Centerstage Theatre. This one night
only event pays tribute to the iconic American girl-group and features Seattle-based entertainers Nique
Haggerty, LaNita Hudson and Amy van Mechcelen. They are backed by the 6-piece Purple Phoenix Band,
under the direction of David Duvall. The concert is staged in the 1960’s style of the Las Vegas/Atlantic Cityshowrooms in their heyday.
The Supremes remain the most chart-successful vocal group of all time, with twelve #1 hits during their
heydey. Among the 30+ Supremes hits included in this high-energy 2-hour concert are: “You Keep Me HanginOn”, “Where Did Our Love Go?”, “Baby Love”, “Back In My Arms Again”, “Love Child”, “Come See About
Me”, “Someday We’ll Be Together”, “In And Out Of Love”, “Reflections”, “My World Is Empty Without You”,
“Love Is Here And Now You’re Gone”, “You Can’t Hurry Love”, “Nothing But Heartaches”, “The
Happening”, “Up The Ladder To The Roof” and their trademark hit “Sop! In The Name Of Love”.
Rising to the most successful act on the Motown recording label, The Supremes began as a Detroit-based jr.
high school vocal quartet called “The Primettes” – a sister act to a Detroit-based all male vocal group called
“The Primes”, who would later achieve their own fame as “The Temptations”. Failing to be signed to theMotown label after their initial audition for Motown owner Berry Gordy, they hung around the studio providing
background vocals, hand claps and running errands for the studio until Gordy agreed to give them a contract –
and their new name. They put out several single records in their first year, and became known around the studio
as “The No-Hit Supremes” when none of their records managed to reach the charts. In one final attempt to make something of the act, Gordy decided to partner the group, who became a trio when
their name was changed, with the fresh songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. That artistic partnership
proved one of the most successful of all time – the writers and singers cranked out hit after hit for the studio.
Gordy saw the group had the potential to “cross over” from the African-American market to the “white” market,
and began changing their look and their sound to broaden their fan base – they were booked into the top
nightclubs and concert halls of the day, and with a number of television appearances became international
celebrities.
In 1968, Gordy changed the name of the group to “Diana Ross and the Supremes” – stating that this way he
could charge more for their performances: a fee for the lead entertainer and a fee for the back-up group. Rumors
persisted, however, that he had other plans for Miss Ross – rumors that were validated when she left the group
in 1970 to pursue a solo career. The vocal trio remained an act on the Motown label for seven more years, and
had a few songs that climbed the charts but never achieved the success they had known before Ross’ departure.
The Supremes gave their final performance at The Drury Lane Theatre in London in 1977.The three women who will be performing in REFLECTIONS OF THE SUPREMES are all veteran
entertainers with eclectic resumes. Nique Haggerty has appeared in RAGTIME, ANNIE, SHOW BOAT, DAMESAT SEA, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH, LA BOHEME, THE MAGIC FLUTE

PORGY AND BESS and several nightclub/concert productions. LaNita Hudson’s resume includes TITANIC,CHESS, THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, GODSPELL, ALL SHOOK UP, CAT ON A HOT TIN
ROOF, AUNTIE MAME, THE COLORED MUSEUM, DREAMGIRLS, SUESSICAL JUNIE B JONES and THE
WEDDING SINGER. Amy van Mechelen credits include DREAMGIRLS, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN,CINDERELLA, STREET SCENE, HANSEL AND GRETEL, THE MAGIC FLUTE, PORGY AND BESS,
TURANDOT, EUGENE ONEGIN and a host of classical recitals.
The all-new arrangements and orchestrations for REFLECTIONS OF THE SUPREMES are created by
Emmy-nominated Seattle-based musical director/arranger David Duvall. Duvall, the Artistic Director for PurplePhoenix Productions, created the earlier Purple Phoenix tributes to Patsy Cline, Lena Horne, Nat “King” Cole,
Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin and Rosemary Clooney.
