In honor of Conflict Resolution Month, Thurston County Dispute Resolution
Center seeks submissions for its “Simple Pleasures Fine Art Postcard
Exhibit”.
Artists of all ages may submit up to five postcard-sized original artworks
relating to the theme “Simple Pleasures”. The exhibit will open during
Olympia’s Arts Walk, Friday, October 4 and will run through the month of
October, 2013.
One path towards peace is to focus on our common ground. Our goal is to
capture that idea in all of it's forms and hang-able mediums in post card
size.
A list of simple pleasures gathered through Twitter emphasizes how simple
pleasures are endless and available to all of us at all ages. They cross
all boundaries: Bare feet in the grass, swimming under a cloudless sky, my
daughter’s laughter, starting a load of laundry with a smile on your face
because you know that nobody's around to mess with it, books,
music, cracking the burnt sugar top on fresh crème brulee', frogs and
crickets at night, air that moves, watching my chickens play and scratch,
popcorn made on the stovetop with butter, Legos, sitting in the near
darkness watching the bats swoop and swirl, candles, the feeling of a warm
glass in my hands, going through new trading cards to see what is in them,
cold water on a hot day, the smell of rain, an outdoor wood fire, sunlight
on lake’s surface, comfortable shoes, dessert, lunch with 89 year old
grandmum who makes the best dal in the world, slowly reading the weekend
papers, burning each section as I go, riding a bike downhill, a log cabin
with no electricity, running in the cool evening air, green lights,
smelling good homemade food when I get home, birds on the feeder, watching
an ant pick up its hurt buddy to carry it to help, watching the playoffs
with my two boys, coming home, June, balcony, sun, coffee, laughing so hard
you can’t breathe, the sound of my cello, a tree swing, reaching the top of
the peak, sitting on the dock swishing my feet in the water, toast in the
morning, exchanging waves with the same stranger for 15 years, having more
money in the bank than I thought, watching my neighbor’s cats on the deck
after work, hearing from someone I love, my son singing when he is happy, a
clean kitchen that I didn’t clean, heavy blankets, windows open on a cool
night, being able to call my Mom, thinking my wallet was lost and finding
it at home, my mind entertaining itself, snoring dogs, green lights...the
list oes on and on, of course.
