YESS: Youth Climate Council!

The YESS Youth Climate Councilhttps://www.piercecountywa.gov/9001/YESS-Youth-Climate-Council brings together young people ages 14-22 who care about creating a positive climate future!

Council members will work with Pierce County's Office of Resilience and Climate Action (ORCA) to help shape local climate solutions. You don't need to be an expert! This program is about learning, growing, and using your voice!

Summer Training Week

The training week will run Aug. 17-21 from 9am-4pm daily. Council members will have a chance to:

  •   Meet and build community with other youth council members.
    
  •   Explore how climate change affects our community.
    
  •   Build leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
    
  •   Understand local government and municipal systems through field trips and hands-on activities.
    

Daily Themes

  •   Monday, Aug.17: Community Building and Orientation
    
  •   Tuesday, Aug. 18: Connecting to Nature Everywhere
    
  •   Wednesday, Aug.19: Addressing Systems and Progress
    
  •   Thursday, Aug.20: Public Process and Accessibility
    
  •   Friday, Aug.21: Working from Justice Centered Joy
    

School Year Commitment

Council members will stay involved throughout the school year by:

  •   Sharing perspectives and wisdom with county leaders and/or other decision-makers.
    
  •   Working together to design a real action project of their choice.
    
  •   Attending outreach events to communicate about sustainability and climate change with the community.
    
  •   Supporting community members in sharing their story of climate change.
    

Time Commitment

  •   Monthly meetings from September to June. The meetings will be held from 4-6 p.m. online.
    
  •   Quarterly in-person meeting (2-4 hours).
    
  •   Attendance at one outreach event (2-4 hours on a weekend).
    
  •   Attendance at one public meeting (2-4 hours typically in the evening).
    
  •   Project event or execution (2-6 hours depending on the project).
    
  •   Story gathering from a community member (2-6 hours depending on the scope).
