Students and Families celebrate the art, art education and literacy at  ART
Night at Sherman Elementary

Thursday, May 15, 2014, 6 -8 pm

Sherman Elementary:  4415 North 38th Street, Tacoma, WA 98407

Students, families and artists and the community will be coming together at
Tacoma School District's Sherman Elementary to experience art in this
evening full of fun and creativity alongside many of Tacoma's talented
artists on Thursday, May 15, 6-8 pm.  Local artists will be leading art
making projects including ceramic, metal, painting, collage, printmaking
and recycled sculpture on this Third Thursday event.  Students, families
and the public are invited to attend and work alongside professional
artists to experience all types of media.  The cost of the event is $10 per
family to attend that goes toward the cost of supplies. Sherman Elementary
is located at 4415 North 38th Street.

ART Night is the culmination of the Artist in Residence Teach at Sherman
(ARTS) program and an ongoing arts initiative coordinated by the Parent
Teacher Association (PTA) working to provide high-quality art experiences.
The artist in Residence Natalie Oswald has been working closely with the
students throughout the year and the final collaborative mural project will
be worked on at the event along with the variety of student artwork created
throughout the residency.  As part of the evening, student designed books
will be on display throughout the school showcasing the artistic talent of
the students and celebrating literacy and reading.  With tight school
budgets, the PTSA works to enrich each student's school experiences, and
arts education is extremely important to develop students' imagination,
innovation, and creative skills.

The public is invited to attend ARTS night at Sherman Elementary and
recognize May as Arts Education Month which recognizes the creative
endeavors taking place in our school and demonstrates to the community that
the arts make a difference in education and student learning.  Arts
Education Month is an opportunity to specifically call attention to the
critical role of arts and empowering schools and communities to provide
every student with arts learning opportunities.
