I am a local artist and I recently got a grant from the Tacoma Art Commission for a photo project which will culminate in a 2 persons photo show at the TCC Gallery (it opens in October!)
I
am looking for children and young adults (kindergarten to high school
age and a few years beyond, depending on the availability and parental
permission) who have been bullied in school and would be interested in
being part of this portrait's project. My goal is to produce more
awareness of this growing problem and, through my images, empower these
young and brave youth who, on a daily basis, have to defend who they
are, who or what they like, and how they feel.
A few things the families and kids need to know is that the photos, and stories of the kids' experience will be public:
Besides the photo, all that will be written in the description of the
experience is the first name of the person photographed, his/her age,
and the age (or grade) they were in the time the bullying occurred. No
last name, no name of the school or the bullies. If anyone would rather
use a different name (invented) that would be ok with me
- photos and stories will be exposed in TCC art gallery in October (and maybe in the future in other galleries?)
maybe covered (surely not in details) and possibly reproduced (the
photos) in some art section of local news papers and magazines
- may
be mentioned in TCC or Tacoma Art Commission's website (though they
told me they would possibly blog about me as an artist and briefly about
the project in general rather than the kid's story)
If anyone
is interested (or you know someone who may be interested) please contact
me ASAP! I will be happy to further explain the project or share
examples of the work so far.
