Think Physically with Richard Jesse Watson
Sunday May 5

Lecture and book signing, 2 pm; Workshop, 3:30 pm
Author-illustrator Richard Jesse Watson will discuss how he imagines and
forms the characters for his books. He will lead an art activity making
3-D sculptures out of recycled materials. Cost: Lecture $10 ($5 for

Chalk a Colorful Creature

Get inspired by the exhibition Beyond Books: The Independent Art of Eric
Carle and chalk a colorful creature during Third Thursday. We will take
photos of all the creations and upload them to Facebook and Instagram

Using Left and Right: An Integrated Approach to Teaching Art and Science

Bring both sides of your brain to this new and exciting teacher workshop
offered by the Foss Waterway Seaport and Tacoma Art Museum. This
workshop combines science and art, allowing participating educators to
experience interdisciplinary activities that embrace creative thinking
while delving into both the scientific and the artistic world.

Join a local artist to explore Eric Carle's work and create a colorful
painting collage inspired by his art that goes beyond his books. Please
note that projects are geared for an adult audience. Cost: $35 ($25 for

The exhibition Drawing Line into Form: Works on Paper by Sculptors from
the BNY Mellon Collection features more than 50 works that explore the
importance of drawing as a creative tool for sculptors, demonstrating
how artists think and express in two-dimensional works that help to
translate these complex ideas into three-dimensional form. The
internationally celebrated artists featured in the collection include
modernist masters as well as contemporary artists who have earned
critical acclaim. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.

Eric Carle is primarily known for The Very Hungry Caterpillar and more
than 70 picture books done in his colorful collage technique. For the
first time, visitors will have a chance to see the remarkable variety of
paintings, sculptures, and personal sketches that he has been making
privately for years. Starting with his career as a poster artist in the
1940s and carrying through to the street photographs he is shooting
today, this exhibition provides viewers a chance to see what the artist
himself calls his "ArtArt." This selection provides a surprisingly
intimate window into the full range of his imagination and talents,
including glass sculpture and costume design for opera.

Creating the New Northwest traces the rapid evolution of Northwest art
