Monthly music events coming to Olalla
The Second Sunday Music Series begins Feb. 9 with Sin Embargo
OLALLA, WA – The Olalla Community Club will brighten winter’s grey days with live music at the community hall starting Feb. 9.
The 2014 Second Sunday Music Series kicks off with a performance by guitarist Alejandro Fleites and Sin Embargo. Fleites, who moved to Gig Harbor from Cuba, will be joined by a trio of friends on guitar, bass and hand percussion.
Sin Embargo’s extensive repertoire combines elements of Latin, jazz, Cuban and American music, seeped in tradition and woven together with stories and anecdotes about the songs and their cultural roots. Hank & Claire, a popular Poulsbo duo, will open the show.
The Second Sunday Series continues on March 9 with Olalla’s own Magical Strings in a pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebration of all things Irish. Pam and Philip Boulding are known the world over for their original and traditional Celtic melodies brought to life on handmade dulcimer and Celtic harp. Rick Gonzales will open the show.
On April 13, Hank & Claire will play traditional, contemporary and original acoustic folk tunes to touch your funny bone and your heart. Paper and Clay will open the show.
The Series concludes with a special Mothers’ Day show on May 11 with internationally known children’s entertainer Jim Valley. (There will be reduced prices for children for this concert.)
All shows start at 2pm. Suggested donation for each show is $15 at the door. (Special kids prices on Mothers’ Day.)
The Series benefits the work of the Olalla Community Club, a non-profit organization that has been serving the community since 1937. Club members maintain the 110-year old community hall and also produce the popular Olalla Bluegrass & Beyond Festival which celebrates 23 years of Kicking the City Off Your Shoes™ on Aug. 16, 2014. Funds from the festival (and the Second Sunday Series) also enable the Club to support local food banks, music programs in several schools and a variety of other local organizations and activities.
