Tacoma, WA – The IN THE SPIRIT Arts Market & Northwest Native Festivalhttps://www.washingtonhistory.org/event/in-the-spirit-festival-2024/ will be back in Downtown Tacoma for its 19th year on August 10, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This community event celebrates Native arts and culture and offers a variety of activities for all ages, including art exhibitions, a fashion show, performing arts, artisan vendors, interactive activities, and food. This free community event is hosted collaboratively by the Washington State History Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, and Museum of Glass. All museums will offer complimentary admission during the festival.
"IN THE SPIRIT has blossomed over the years into an extraordinary community tradition," said Washington State Historical Society Director Jennifer Kilmer. "This year, we were thrilled to receive more applications to participate than ever before. There is an incredible influx of new talent alongside IN THE SPIRIT favorites."
Guests to the Washington State History Museum can explore the juried exhibition IN THE SPIRIT: Contemporary Native Artshttps://www.washingtonhistory.org/exhibit/in-the-spirit-2024/. The exhibition features over 40 artworks by Native artists from across the country, showcasing art ranging from traditional craftsmanship to innovative styles. Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite piece, and the winning artist will receive the "People's Choice Award."
At the WSHM plaza, guests can shop at the Arts Market, which features Native artisan vendors selling crafts, jewelry, clothing, art and food. Many of the artists in the exhibition will be present as vendors.
Throughout the day, performances will take place at the WSHM amphitheater. Performances will begin at noon with the Alaska Kuteeyaa Dancers (Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Aleut, Muckleshoot, and Quielute), followed by Native American Flute Player of the Year, Rona Yellow Robe (Chippewa Cree Tribe) at 1:00 PM. At 3:00 PM, two Washington State Poet Laureates, Rena Priest (Lummi) and Arianne True (Chocktaw, Chickasaw) will share poetry readings. At 4:15, the heavy-rock band LOZEN (Puyallup) will close the festival.
At 2:00 PM, the Tacoma Art Museum will host the highly anticipated return of the IN THE SPIRIT Indigenous Fashion Show. Led by award-winning creative director and designer Mary Kelsay (Native Village of Nikolski) of MEKA Clothing, the show will highlight contemporary Indigenous fashion inspired by ancestral motifs and traditional materials.
At the Museum of Glass, guests can watch glass art demonstrations by visiting artist Raven Skyriver in the Hot Shop. Families can learn about formline art and participate in hands-on art activities. The museum will also host Glass Fest Northwest, featuring local artisans, food, drinks, and music on the plaza.
IN THE SPIRIT programming is made possible by the guidance of the Native Advisory Committee. Together, they aim to grow cultural appreciation, support Native artists, and celebrate the diversity of Native arts.
IN THE SPIRIT is funded in part by Tacoma Venues & Events.
