!! Georgetown Carnival !!
call for volunteers

Saturday June 8th, 12-8 pm

We at Equinox Studios have an amazing plan to outdo ourselves at this year's Georgetown Carnival June 8. We have created five stations, we need volunteer help at all of them. Each station's aim is to include as much artmaking by the public as we can. The last two stations are about fabricating parts for a public art piece Equinox is building. It will be installed close by at the Oxbow Park. We will teach you to teach and aid festival goers in creating art. This is inclusive artmaking, not watching art being made.

The stations are:

• Bangers and Clangers: a large triangular rack from which many steel tubes and tanks hang. A plethora of the percussive: an harmonic part, a cacophonous part and a percussive part. Hopefully symphonic, possible cacophony, fun at any rate.

• Splat-a-Paint: four miniature catapults that fling dixie cups of paint at a target piece of paper 10 feet away. Help folks make their paintings with these U-fill, U fling devices. Help needed behind the scenes and in the front of the house. Much whooping to be had, it's delightful. We did it last year, super popular.

• The Great Weave: a five foot diameter hoop of steel with tall steel rods extending skyward- 8 feet or so. To be interwoven with strips of wood, wire, rope, plastic, unwanted canvas paintings, any fabric, tree branches, garden hose, air hose, panty hose, who knows. It's designed to encourage extensions to be built (think Dr Seuss), and, to be woven from the inside. Several folks can weave at once. A true community shenanigan.

• Steel part of Public Art Sculpture: Help the welders place steel shapes, symbols of Georgetown's past and present, onto a long winding canopy of steel. Shaped like an old oxbow that was cut out of the Duwamish River, this canopy is part of a public art piece to be installed at the Oxbow park. The public gets to pick out a piece of steel, stamp their initials, and add it to the river canopy. This sinuous shape will hang over a tiled ceramic bench, (see below).

• Clay part of Public Art Sculpture: The tiled bench is S-curved, made from concrete, and represents the Duwamish river as it is now. We need help helping the public make the tiles that will cover the concrete bench. We will be using two big slab rollers, the public (and you) will roll slabs of clay, then press cutters into the fresh clay, and cut over 4000 small tiles. There will be a second section to glaze tiles, in river blues of course. All tiles will be used to tile the winding bench that supports the steel canopy. It's wicked, you'll love it.

Please contact James Ryan at: tandemfabrications@gmail.com if you can help. For any two-hour section of the day. (8-10, 10-12, 12-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10 afterwards for breakdown.) If you can help longer, we can totally use your help. The Carnival itself goes from 12 noon- 8 pm. We need help setting up (8 am-noon) and breakdown (8 pm-11:30pm).

Post Event BBQ: in honor of and appreciation of all volunteers, we will host you a BBQ and bonfire the next weekend. We will draw and quarter last year's wood sculpture, probably burn it, feed and celebrate you, play corn hole, infuse the evening with wonderment and mayhem. And possibly a few explosions.
