Peninsula Art League Presents International Art Exhibition
150 paintings are on display at the Gig Harbor History Museum thru Oct. 5
(Gig Harbor) Gig Harbor’s 11th annual open juried art exhibition is currently on display at the Harbor History Museum. The show is presented by Peninsula Art League.
More than 300 entries were received from artists throughout the U. S. and Canada. Juror Joe Garcia, an internationally known painter, selected 150 artworks for the show.
A dark, moody portrait of a woman by California oil painter Zin Lim won the Best of Show award. Garcia said that the unique perspective of the portrait – in profile rather than face-forward – drew him to the painting. “It’s totally different from what you expect a portrait to be – it doesn’t stare back at you when you look at it,” he said. “And technically, it’s very, very good. The brush strokes in the hair are very well done – almost transparent. And you can just imagine the story it tells.”
Garcia selected another oil – a painting of two women in bathing suits on a beach by Gig Harbor artist Lynda Lindner – for the First Place-Painting award, and an almost surreal shot of a lily as the First Place-Photography winner. Other prizes were awarded by local businesses.
One final award has yet to be announced: the People’s Choice award will be presented Oct. 4 at 1pm. Voting continues through noon Oct. 3 in the main gallery of the museum. “We hope that everyone who visits the show will take time to vote for their favorite artwork,” said show co-chair Sheila Anderson.
Group tours, lead by PAL members, will be available on Sept. 19. To schedule a tour call Sheila Anderson at (253) 549-3042 or co-chair Karen Wilsey at (253) 549-2929.
The museum is open 10am-5pm Tuesday-Sunday.
