Visualizing Stories: A Discussion with Randy Bolton, Mita Mahato, and Scott Kolbo
Monday, November 4, 7:00 PM
Kings Books, 218 St. Helens Ave
Join us for a conversation with three artists working with narrative in their artwork. The conversation will be led by Mita Mahato.
Mita Mahato is Associate Professor of English at the University of Puget Sound, where she specializes in contemporary Visual and Cultural Studies, with a secondary specialization in nineteenth-century British Literature. Mita makes comic books using collage and is also working on a longer narrative (part memoir, part fairy tale) about end-of-life care and its subsequent grief and pain.
Randy Bolton is head of the Print Media Department and Artist in Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Bolton's work is characterized by an exploration of images that seem familiar and comforting on first glance, but become strange and disturbing on further consideration. His prints borrow from and adapt the nostalgia-evolving illustrations of early children's books and science texts. Bolton digitally alters and recombines fragments of old illustrations to create new meanings that suggest an undercurrent of uncertainty or apprehension.
As a kid Scott Kolbo spent countless hours drawing to stave off boredom, and drawing continues to play a dominant role in all his work. He became interested in the tradition of satire by looking through art books in the library and realizing that he was most attracted to prints with funny looking people in them. His Drawings, Prints, and video projections feature reoccurring characters and fragmentary narratives and are exhibited regionally and nationally. He received a B.F.A from Boise State University in 1996, a M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000, and currently teaches at Seattle Pacific University.
This event is sponsored by the Art Department at the University of Puget Sound and Kings Books.  It is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.
