Free ink rubbing workshop and lecture at the Washington State History Museum

What: – Learn about Chinese-style ink rubbings from Professor Vernon Ng, who will offer a lecture, interactive workshop, and audience question and answer session about this ancient scholarly practice.

Ink rubbings date back to the 7th Century CE, during the Tang Dynasty, and have been an essential technique for preserving historical markers and inscriptions for over a thousand years.

Professor Ng will discuss his "Tacoma Inspection Tour" project, which adapts Chinese scholarly practices to examine settler colonialism in public spaces across the city. This project explores local sites with complex, overlapping meanings, especially for Asian and Native communities, using ink rubbings and landscape photographs.
