Japanese Temari
Registration Deadline is Approaching

Life is a Circus, 2011

Even Japan's beloved Zen monk, Ryōkan (1758–1831) whiled away the days playing with children and their temari. From The Zen Fool Ryōkan by Misao Kodama & Hikosaku Yanagishima, comes the following translation of one of his poems about temari:

When the long winter is over,
I must go down to the village
To ask for rice from the villagers.
Then on the road
I see the children bouncing balls
Freely enjoying the fragrance of spring.
Calling out loud, "One, two, three, four, five, six."
I sing the rhymes for them
and they bounce balls
Timing to my singing and vice versa.
When we stop playing
The long, hazy spring day
Has finally come to an end!

This is just one example of the richness of temari's history and one poem of several about temari by Ryōkan. No, we won't be playing with temari but I expect there will be some temari bouncing along the floor during the workshop - temari seem to take a life of their own!

If you want to learn more about temari's history and discover a wonderful Japanese folk art, please register for the 2-Day Temari Workshop scheduled  Saturday and Sunday, June 1st and 2nd at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center located at  4851 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma WA.  To register, contact Kathy at kathy@kathleenhewitt.com or 253-229-3100.

No Experience Necessary!

Class fee for this 10 hour, 2 day workshop is only $100.00.  Everything included in the additional materials/supplies fee of $15.00.
